Tring School has been at the heart of the local community for almost 200 years, combining a strong tradition of learning with a distinctive Christian ethos and a commitment to it's pupils and families.
Founded in 1842
The school began as a Church of England National School, established by the Reverend Edward I. Randolph to provide education for children in the local community. Its foundation was rooted in the belief that education should help young people to learn, flourish and contribute to the communities around them.
That Church of England foundation remains an important part of who we are today. Tring School is a Church of England school within the Diocese of St Albans, welcoming young people and families from all backgrounds and faiths, as well as those of no faith. Our Christian character shapes our commitment to education, community, service and the development of the whole person.
The original school was located in the High Street, on the site where Tring Library and car park now stand.
From the High Street to Mortimer Hill
1866
As the town and school grew, the buildings were enlarged and developed.
1914
During the First World War, the school played an unexpected role in the life of the town when its buildings were taken over and used as a military hospital. Pupils were taught in different buildings around Tring while the school supported the wider wartime effort.
1930s
The junior and secondary sections were reorganised as separate schools.
1956
The senior school moved from the High Street to its present home on Mortimer Hill.
1969
Tring School became a co-educational 11–19 school, continuing to develop and grow alongside the local community.
A school that continues to evolve
2012
Tring School became an academy in 2012 and joined the Ridgeway Learning Partnership in 2017. Today, it is a large 11–18 Church of England school and sixth form, continuing a tradition of education that began in Tring nearly two centuries ago.
2021
The school entered another significant chapter in its history. A major redevelopment transformed the Mortimer Hill site, with a new, state-of-the-art school building providing modern learning spaces and specialist facilities for a new generation of students.
