Physical Education

Physical Education A Level is a challenging course which in recent years has achieved the distinction it deserves. The theory syllabus covers the scientific, socio-cultural and environmental factors which influence Physical Education. This includes topics as diverse as anatomy and physiology, sports psychology and skill acquisition, sport and society and technology in sport.

Why should I study Physical Education?

  • You want to continue your interest in Physical Education into the Sixth Form.
  • You play at least one sport competitively.
  • It is interesting and enjoyable.
  • It has a practical element and coursework.
  • It relates well to other A Levels particularly in the social and natural sciences.
  • An Advanced Level in PE is rapidly becoming an essential qualification for specialist study in Physical Education or Sports Studies in higher education and it is also a suitable qualification for other areas of study.

Entry Requirements

Grade 5 in GCSE PE, Grade 5 in GCSE Science and 1 sport played competitively.

Future Opportunities

This qualification will enable students to gain entry into University courses leading to careers in: Physical Education Teaching, Physiotherapy, Coaching, Sports Psychology, Sports Development, Exercise Physiology and Research Science, Leisure Industry, Fitness/Personal Trainer.

Course Content & Assessment

Course Content

The theory part of the course is examined with 2 exam papers at the end of the two years. The coursework/practical elements is assessed internally and externally moderated. The syllabus stresses the importance of being able to translate the theoretical work into performing and coaching situations and being able to critically evaluate these areas.

Assessment

70% written examination, 30% practical assessment. One coursework piece.

Paper 1: Factors affecting participation in physical activity and sport.

Paper 2: Factors affecting optimal performance in physical activity and sport.

ENRICHMENT AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR

We provide a number of opportunities for students wishing to take part in sport outside of the curriculum. We have an excellent sporting reputation both locally and nationally through our extensive extra-curricular programme which focusses on recreational participation as well as competitive performances. We regularly play in national, county and district competitions as well as friendly fixtures and we have strong links with local sports clubs.

House sporting events

Tring School also has a very strong and competitive house system which our house games and swimming galas and annual sports day are integral parts. These events give all students the opportunity to rake part in sporting activities for their house.

Enrichment

The PE department offer other opportunities for recreational and sporting activities. We organise the bi-annual ski trip for years 10 and above.
