Rewards & Sanctions

Rewards

We believe that our students perform more successfully if they are rewarded for their efforts. Apart from praise and a positive system of assessment of work, Super Stickers are rewarded to recognise achievement and good work in subject areas, community service or great effort. Super Stickers are collected in students’ individual planners. Certificates are presented when a student reaches certain Super Sticker milestones. The school also has a number of presentation events during the year and letters are sent to parents of pupils who have been invited to sign the Tring School Commendation book.

Sanctions

Sanctions are applied where considered necessary. These, like the system of Rewards, work on a sliding scale depending on the severity or frequency of the offence. A verbal warning should be enough in the first instance. If not, referrals may be used:

Referrals: These are used by all staff to alert the tutor to minor misdemeanours committed by his or her tutees.
Report sheets: "Report" sheets are used to monitor a pupil's progress for a given period of time.
Detentions: Detentions are also given. These can be from a few minutes, possibly to complete an exercise, to school detentions which take place on Fridays and last for an hour. Parents are given written \ verbal notice of detentions at least 24 hours in advance, and there is a reply slip for parents to sign to indicate receipt.
Internal Exclusion:

The Internal Exclusion room is the school’s second most powerful sanction behind fixed term exclusion. The room is a place where students who have demonstrated seriously challenging behaviour will be placed to work in a silent, supervised and orderly environment.

Exclusion: The decision to exclude a student is not taken lightly however, for more serious incidents Fixed Term or Permanent Exclusion may be used.

Celebration Assemblies

As a school we believe that students’ successes should be recognised and celebrated. One of the main ways the school does this is through our assemblies. These are usually conducted in Houses. There are also some special Sixth Form assemblies. Students across all the Key Stages have the opportunity to receive rewards for their academic achievements, community efforts and attendance.

Year 7 had a Celebration Assembly where over 100 Year 7 students were recognised as 'Stars'.

There was also some information given to the students about how poor behaviour can lead to Housepoints being taken away and where Year 7 are in terms of Keystage 3.
